Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Released: 1974

American Slasher

Directed by Tobe Hooper

Written and Produced by

Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel

Budget: $140,000

This classic follows a small group of friends, one of whom is disabled, as they travel to a relative's land to camp and have a good time. They run out of gas and are preyed upon by a psycho family of rednecks.

The film was banned in multiple countries due to "unnecessary violence."

Numerous theaters reported complaints about the violence, and several stopped showing it completely.

Despite the mixed reception and complaints against violence, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was very profitable. The filming budget was $140,000 and was reported to have grossed over $30 million at the box office.

Critics commented that the film touched on a few facets of American life. Leatherface and his family are poor and undereducated. Additionally, the family has been slaughterhouse workers for generations, a trade now rendered useless by technology. This further pushes the family into poverty, further casting them as 'villains.'

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is viewed as 'the ultimate pro-vegetarian film.'

Wonder why.

At the beginning of the film, a message is displayed claiming the contents of the movie were based on a real story. They were not, and this misleads several.

The film was released on VHS and distributed by Bryanston Films, a small company with connections to New York's Colombo crime family.
